Black Gold is an affectionate and even-tempered jennet. Bred last year to Quarter Moon Deacon she recently presented us with a gorgeous foal, a little jack with hair as dark as his mother's. Black Gold has quality written all over her, and we were thrilled when she came to us from Carolyn and Pete Christian's ranch. She bonded with us quickly and now I can't imagine life without her. She is usually the first to leave the herd and walk over to the gate when she hears my voice. If I'm busy and fail to come directly to her she will stand beside the fence calling softly with short whimpers, while never taking those beautiful expressive eyes off me. I can almost understand what she's saying, "Hurry, Mom, hurry! Please don't let the other girls get here before you give me our special hug." Now who could resist that gentle urging from such a wonderful donkey? We anticipate seeing some spectacular foals come from Black Gold in the future through breeding with our sorrel Jack, Code Red.

I call this girl my regal lady, for she has an air of nobility and dignity about her. Her color is light sorrel which looks almost pink to me and she has very good conformation. She came to us from Canada after we had chosen her from among Cooke's mature jennets. She had been with Grant and Sharon since she was a weanling and through the years had given them some outstanding foals. When Peach Schnapps arrived here she had been bred to Red Lightening and recently gave birth to a striking sorrel jennet foal. What a gentle and loving mother she is. It warms my heart to watch her interact with her little daughter. She somehow manages to give needed discipline in an unobtrusive manner and yet get the message across plainly. To spend time in the pasture with this elegant lady is restful for me, and she seems to understand what a good friend I consider her to be.

This girl is one of a kind. She is opinionated with a "look at me" attitude, and always makes sure that everyone, people and donkeys alike, are fully aware that she's to be noticed. The first time we saw her was while visiting with Carolyn Christian at Quarter Moon Ranch in Franklin, Texas. We were admiring the nice herd of jennets when I saw a foal and dam that caught my attention. It was Buttons with her month old daughter, Souvenir, and what a good looking pair they were. Carolyn hadn't considered selling the two of them together but we asked her if that would be possible. I practically held my breath waiting for an answer because Buttons had already captivated me with her unique personality. About a week later we were happily heading back down to Franklin pulling the trailer in which we'd bring our two new girls home. And what fun we've had with Buttons as a part of our donkey family. She has mastered the art of drawing attention to herself when she feels that she's being even slightly overlooked. One stunt is to put her front hoofs up onto our stone sitting bench and look down at the other jennets as if to say,"Bet you can't do this." Which of course brings her much attention from us and our visitors, thus achieving her goal. Buttons is a well put together donkey whose pedigree goes all the way back to the original imports. Her daughter, Souvenir, is now a yearling having turned one year of age in April of 2004, and Buttons has a newborn jennet foal by her side.

Trinket is very dear to us. She is the oldest of our jennets and the others give her the respect that she's earned. Gentle and obedient, she understands that there is no need to stress over every little thing that comes along. When her pasture mates are all in a dither about some imagined danger she calmly watches them as if to say, "You girls are wasting time and energy over nothing." Although Trinket no longer has her youthful figure it is plain to see that she has good basic conformation. Passing her conformation and other desirable traits on to her offspring she throws very nice foals. She is a splendid mother who takes her job seriously and raises well adjusted, mannerly babies. And she's also a loyal, trusted friend to our grandaughter, Laura Mae, who recently turned six years old. When Trinket doesn't have a foal by her side needing undivided attention, she and Laura Mae are the best of buddies. They have spent many hours roaming our property together while strengthening the bonds of friendship, leaving no doubt in our minds that both donkey and little girl benefit from the interaction. Yes, Trinket is special indeed.

A prima donna if I've ever seen one Miss Caldee is never boring. She's a small girl with excellent conformation and the famous Nissen head. She shares a pasture with Isaac and Rebekah, neither of whom have a problem with allowing her to be boss of the herd. When I visit with them Miss Caldee puts me in mind of the eager to be heard child in a classroom. She appears to be saying, "Me first! Oh! Oh! Me, me, me! Hug me first!" each and every time I open the gate for a visit. If she could wave her little hoof in the air to draw attention I think she would do so. A petite bundle of energy she pushes her way past the other two in order to be first in line, making it impossible for anyone to overlook her. When we go out for a walk Miss Caldee doesn't just walk along she skips and dances, and she's never ready to end the fun by going back into her pasture. She seems to know that she is beautiful and is just bursting with self-confidence. When she reaches her third birthday we plan to arrange a meeting between her and our sorrel jack, Code Red. We feel that the combination of those two will give us an outstanding foal.

Rebekah is a born nurturer. Even when we got her as a six month old weanling, she was more concerned with consoling four month old Isaac during his period of separation anxiety than she was with herself. When he cried for his mother Rebekah would be right there to help him adjust. As a result of this he absolutely adores her. Rebekah is special to us because she was our first jennet and she taught Mike and I much about how to be Miniature Donkey owners. She and Isaac planted in our hearts the desire to learn more about these fascinating little animals and to then enlarge our herd. She is patient and mild-mannered, and is a perfect little friend and companion. Some of my most peaceful hours have been spent with gentle Rebekah beside me, quietly loving and knowing that she is loved in return. And it's been an absolute pleasure watching her as she's grown into a lovely young lady. She'll soon be old enough to meet one of our jacks and become a mother. That's not a prospect I'm looking forward to because Rebekah is my little girl and I wish I could keep her as innocent to the ways of the world as she is now. But on the other hand there is the anticipation of seeing her first foal at her side and watching her nurture a baby of her own. Bred to either Cadillac Jack or Code Red I'm sure that our Rebekah will give us a winning foal.

Ciara is a beautiful donkey and I fell in love with her the moment I first saw her. When she hears my voice or catches a glimpse of me walking out to her paddock she calls out a welcome in her unique deep voiced bray and keeps it up as she hurries to be the first to greet me at the gate.

Following a stellar career in the showring Ciara is now at home to stay. She competed in many shows in the United States and Canada and never failed to bring home ribbons. She placed at every show in which she was entered, and along the way she won some outstanding titles including the following:

2004 North American Breeder's Sweepstakes Champion Jennet
2004 World Miniature Donkey Show ~ 3rd Jennets
2004 NMDA Nationals in Texas ~ 3rd in halter (out of 50 entries)
2005 Oregon Gold 1st Yearling Jennets
2005 Oregon Gold Grand Champion Jennet
2005 Oregon Gold Best of Breed
2005 Oregon Gold 2nd In Hand Green Trail
2006 National Champion Showmanship at Halter, Adults (over 50 entries)

At the 2005 NMDA Show in Conroe, Texas, Ciara was Champion Jennet of All Ages on Judge Larry Parnall's card....and was also named Best of Breed by the same judge. This is her 2nd Best of Breed in the same year in two different states....Oregon and Texas.

Ciara proved that she is not just another pretty face by winning a very large In Hand Trail Class at the 2006 Houston Livestock Show. Ciara, as usual, was not afraid to take on the geldings and brought home a belt buckle to prove it.

Ciara is now starting her second career which will be in the breeding pasture and we are eagerly anticipating the foals she will produce. We are hopeful that her offspring will inherit her traits of excellence in the show ring, suberb conformation, intelligence, a sweet and gentle nature, and an unusual coloring that stands out in a crowd.

Ciara came to us from Wayne and Wendy Lyon of Stonegate Acres in Canada. At a very young age she was already skilled in performance techniques due to the top of the line training and attention that Wayne and Wendy had given her. After Ciara arrived in Texas she continued her schooling with Kathy Loudamy of K&K Ranch in Brownsboro, Texas. We thank both of these fine training facilities for bringing out Ciara's full potential. As for me, I am looking forward to the years ahead and the enjoyment that this dear little girl will bring to us as a much loved member of our miniature donkey family. Not only did she win consistently in the showring but she has also won my heart.

Souvenir is very feminine and has a sweet nature. When she joined our family along with her dam, Buttons, she was a tiny, adorable month old baby. I hugged her close to me saying,"You are my pretty little princess", and from that moment on I have called her my princess. This little girl has the honor of being Quarter Moon Deacon's very first foal and is a splendid example of the top-notch offspring he'll produce. Mike and I are delighted with the fact that Souvenir has inherited her sire's beautiful head, and his nice straight legs. Her exceptional conformation comes from both Deacon and Buttons, but it is from her mother that she got a touch of the theatrical. I find myself laughing often at something Souvenir has done that reminds me of her mother. She is persistent when it comes to wanting out of the pasture in order to hang around with us while we do our chores. The other three yearling girls that are pastured with her seem to be okay staying in, but not my little princess. It's as if she is thinking to herself, "Hey! She's out there, I'm in here! That is not acceptable to me! Not at all acceptable!" It wouldn't surprise me if Souvenir one day figures out how to open the gate for herself. When she's in the show ring she is a perfectly well behaved donkey and is eager to please. Our daughter, Carla, showed her a couple of times and she brought home ribbons. Mike and I have high hopes for our little princess in the coming years. And it will be fun watching her as she fulfills those hopes in her own matchless way.

When Emily Elizabeth was only a few days old Mike was in Stephenville and decided to drop by All Creature's Small Farm for a quick visit with Jesse and Kay. While admiring the new babies he saw a very dark brown foal beside her mother and asked about her. Upon arriving back at home he told me that it would be worth the forty-five minute drive over there for me to go and take a look for myself. Well, of course, I fell in love with the tiny little girl and soon she was ours. For the next four months, at least twice a week, I would go there and spend time bonding with Emily and letting her get to know me. When she was weaned and we brought her home she already knew that she was my donkey, and so the transition wasn't so hard on her. She is the largest of our yearling jennets and could easily take the position of herd boss, but that is not her style. She is an extremely relaxed, laid-back girl who gets along with everyone. Her attitude seems to be, "It's no big deal to me who runs this pasture. It's not worth quarreling about and getting all bent out of shape over." She quietly waits her turn and gets an extra hug from me for being such a good girl. We're hoping that Emily will present us with some nice dark foals when she becomes old enough to be a mother.

Miss Diva lives up to her name. She is a beautiful spotted girl and seems to be very aware of her beauty. She is our only spotted jennet. When she and her pasture mate were introduced as the new weanlings here at North Gate Farm, she let it be known right away that she was to be the top donkey. Since there were only the two girls pastured together Miss Diva easily became "leader of the herd". She is an affectionate little lady who loves our daily walks and all the attention we shower her with. No matter where she is when she hears my voice calling to her, she will race at full speed in order to be the first one to greet me. What a welcome addition she is to our mini-donkey family and we anticipate many years of sharing love with her. Photos compliments of Satroma Ranch.

Ebony Rose is a darling little girl. She has a gentle nature and a sweetness about her that melts my heart. When her friend, Miss Diva, decided to be leader of the "two jennet herd" that idea was just fine with her, and I could almost hear her saying, "No problem, I don't want to be the boss anyway, but you don't scare me". The weanling girls bonded immediately and are so close that they seem to be stuck together with velcro. It's fun to watch them as they interact. Ebony Rose enjoys our daily walk and is curious about everything she sees along the way, so we spend a lot of time checking things out rather than walking. She is so precious, and it'll be fun loving her while watching her grow up.
